(July 9, 2000 - Cherbourg, France) Weather has been an issue as the second phase of the dive on the CSS Alabama begins. In this photograph, a diver is trying to uncover the firing mechanism on the aft pivot gun which still remains on the site. Archaeologist William Morris diagrams the lifting frame for the retractable propellor on the CSS Alabama. The edge of the top blade of the propellor can be seen in the right side of the photo. Archaeologist William Morris examines the salt glazed jar recovered from the CSS Alabama. It is a unique due to the fact that it was broken and later repaired by a crew member of the Alabama before she sank. |
