Artifacts from the Maritime
Museum of South Africa have been loaned to the newly expanded
Museum of Mobile, Alabama, for display for that city's Tricentennial celebration. Mr. Jaco
Boshoff, marine archaeologist for the museum, brought a flag that had flown on the CSS ALABAMA
and a revolver given to a South African resident by an officer of the cruiser. In addition,
Mr. Boshoff brought a painting of the CSS ALABAMA donated to the museum by Mr. Ken Sheppard
of Mossel Bay, South Africa. Mr. Sheppard coordinated the loan of the artifacts and commissioned
the painting, an image of which appears on the home page of this website.
Mr. Sheppard was represented by his cousin, Jean Morris, Mrs. Rex Morris.
CSS ALABAMA Association (USA) President Robert Edington presented Mr. Boshoff with a commission
as a captain. The handsome commission is was made using an image taken from the original plates
used to produce commissions for officers of the Confederate States Navy. These commissions can be
purchased by members.
